The Accessible Waterways Association (AWA) and the Residential Boat Owners’ Association (RBOA) recognise that the aims of our organisations overlap. The purpose of this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is to record our common concern is that all boaters, especially, those that live on their boats, are treated with respect, dignity and recognised as full members of society and accorded the same rights as those who live in more traditional homes.
AWA’s primary concern is that of the accessibility of our waterways in all aspects. This includes the accessibility of moorings and essential infrastructure for boaters with disability or limited mobility of any kind. RBOA’s primary concern is the provision of residential moorings and places where liveaboard boaters can moor for extended periods (longer than 14 days) with the tacit, if not overt, agreement and support of the relevant navigation authority. Clearly both organisations fully support each other’s primary concerns.
Thus, this Memorandum of Understanding establishes a framework for collaboration between AWA and RBOA, underscoring our commitment to advocate for the needs of the boating community. We pledge to work together to:
- Promote accessibility to moorings and essential infrastructure for boaters with mobility challenges.
- Advocate for residential moorings that allow liveaboard boaters to stay for extended periods legally and safely.
- Engage with relevant authorities to secure the rights and recognition of boaters as integral members of society.
- Share knowledge, resources, and support to address common issues faced by our members.
By joining forces, we aim to create a boating environment that is inclusive, respectful, and supportive, ensuring that all boaters can enjoy their lifestyle with the dignity and rights they deserve.
